Finding a celebratory meal or a pair of nice socks for Father’s Day is par for the course, but if quality time with Dad is on your agenda, these four B.C.-based experiences are both a gift and a growing memory. Here’s an experience for any kind of dad.
For the Home Cook: Knife Skills Class

Knife skills classes at Knifewear Vancouver take place at least weekly at their Main Street shop (and on Saturdays and Sundays for the rest of the summer). In two hours, you and dad will sharpen your existing cooking knives together on a whetstone, plus learn a little more about different types of steels used in knifemaking, sharpening theory and more. What’s more: $50 of your $100 class fee will go toward the purchase of sharpening supplies at the store, plus 10 percent off any other goods you might want to take home.

For the Meat Lover: Steak Masterclass and Tasting

Maybe it’s a cliche that Dads love to grill steaks on the barbecue, but sometimes what’s simple is true. Richmond-based restaurant House of Dawn, known for serving up a tender, expertly done steak, is now sharing the knowledge with meat-lovers and meat-grillers alike with a Steak Masterclass. In this two-hour tasting class (happening on Sundays) led by the restaurant’s head chef, you and dad will be able to try eight premium cuts of steak, including ribeyes and sirloins, while learning about how marbling, breed, aging and origin influence what ends up on the plate. For $128, you’ll get the full class experience, plus about eight to 10 oz of steak tastings, a fresh fruit platter and a non-alcoholic drink. Upgrade to wine for $5.

For the Thrill Seeker: Ride on the Gravity Coaster

New this year to Grouse Mountain’s outdoor experiences, the Grouse Mountain Gravity Coaster is a permanent, set track roller coaster that takes riders down “the cut,” through a series of twists and turns through trees and stopping (briefly) at a jaw-dropping view of Vancouver from above. You won’t have to trek back up the mountain to get back to the top—the coaster will take you from top to bottom and back without ever having to unbuckle. Solo rides start from $29 per person (plus cost of admission to the mountain), and booking windows run from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. daily.
For the Bon Vivant: Private Cocktail Making Class

The sophisticated dad might fancy himself some kind of Hemingway, so Vancouver’s Long Table Distillery has an experience you and your Bon Vivant dad won’t soon forget: a private cocktail making class. For $70 per person, you’ll get to graze on snacks like pita, hummus and charcuterie and learn to make one-to-three cocktails (depending on your class size), perfecting the art of a classic drink. All booze and supplies are included. Bottoms up!
