Not just a B.C. story: Why Eskay Creek matters to Canada

Skeena Gold + Silver’s revitalized Eskay Creek mine is reshaping the future of national resource development.

The Eskay Creek Gold-Silver Project is one of the most significant Canadian natural resource projects currently under development.

Located in northwest British Columbia—a region globally recognized for its geological endowment—the project is revitalizing a previously producing underground mine, while supporting Indigenous partnership, local employment and long-term economic growth.

During its previous operating life, Eskay Creek was the highest-grade gold mine in the world and one of the largest silver-producing mines. It served as a cornerstone of economic activity in northwest B.C., supporting hundreds of direct and indirect jobs.

Skeena Gold + Silver (TSX: SKE) is now redeveloping Eskay Creek as a modern, large-scale, high-grade open-pit mining operation, in full partnership with and with support from the local Tahltan Nation. Notably, Eskay Creek is the first mining project in B.C. to have its permits authorized by a First Nations government under a consent-based decision-making agreement established through Section 7 of the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA).

Powering B.C. and Canada’s economy

With the project fully permitted and under construction, and initial production expected in 2027, Eskay Creek is again positioned to be a significant contributor to the regional, provincial and national economy. During its construction, Eskay Creek will provide approximately 1,500 direct, well-paying jobs, with a strong emphasis on employment and contracting opportunities for local communities.

Once in production, the mine is expected to support an additional 950 direct jobs. The project is also expected to generate more than $7 billion in provincial and federal tax revenue and $24 billion in GDP contributions over its operating life, based on current approximate metal prices. These revenues would support public services such as health care, education and infrastructure, while contributing to long-term economic development across Canada.

Eskay Creek is also expected to play an important role in supporting supply chains across B.C. and Canada—and not just for the local critical mineral and precious metal industry. The project will generate sustained demand for local goods and services, including engineering, construction, transportation and environmental monitoring, benefitting a broad range of businesses. Over time, these investments are expected to help build capacity among contractors and service providers, support skills development and strengthen economic resilience in northern communities.

Taken together, these benefits position Eskay Creek as more than the redevelopment of a historic mine. The project reflects a modern approach to resource development in Canada, one that brings together economic growth, Indigenous partnership and long-term regional opportunity.
