Meet the new dean
Simon Fraser University’s Beedie School of Business has a new boss, and his name is Ali Dastmalchian. Dastmalchian is new to SFU, having joined from the University of Victoria’s Gustavson School of Business, where he currently works as a professor of organization studies and international business and was previously dean for a decade (between 2002 and 2012). Prior to that role, he served as dean of faculty management at the University of Lethbridge. In a release, SFU president Andrew Petter said that Dastmalchian’s “devotion to teaching and research, combined with his commitment to collaboration and engagement, fit perfectly with SFU’s vision to be Canada’s Engaged University.”

Coquitlam fights back
On Monday, Coquitlam city council voted in new zoning bylaws to restrict the building of ginormous houses—particularly, homes that fill their plot of land like a freshly baked muffin. The suburb explored the issue after residents started complaining about new homes being built in pre-existing neighbourhoods that took things a little far, size-wise, impeding views and the general neighbourhood esthetic. The new bylaws change the way housing proposals are evaluated with the end goal of knocking overly ambitious ones down a size. (via CBC)

Search and revenue
As the number of search-and-rescue missions hits new highs in B.C.—now more than 1,300 a year, up from 900 in 2002—the groups in charge of saving lost lives are asking for more money. The B.C. Search and Rescue Association’s draft proposal recommends creating a foundation—with yearly funding—to help financially support the province’s search and rescue organizations. The hugely profitable B.C. Lottery Corporation was one suggestion for a source of revenue. (via Vancouver Sun)
