Candidate Mike Farnworth, on setting aside partisanship and a new path for BC NDP leadership.

British Columbians want change. I am running for leader because I believe I am the best candidate to move the BC NDP forward, and provide a positive alternative to the BC Liberals in the next election.

As I have said many times, British Columbians don’t want a government that is more “right wing” or more “left wing.” The people of this province want a government that is relevant, and listens to both their needs and their ideas.


The BC NDP must expand its base and be in tune with the majority in this province. That means we have to show that we understand not just social issues, but also the economy. Economic and social success are linked, and both have to take place on a strong environmental foundation.
 
New Democrats must put forward a positive, progressive platform that promotes a strong economy. I believe this includes making investments in green jobs, supporting the province’s resource industries, and providing stability and clarity with regards to decisions around taxation.
 
A strong economy, however, also requires that we make key investments in education, and in poverty reduction to ensure we have the work force required in a 21st-century economy.
 
That is why I have already committed to a commission on education, and to a strategy to address B.C.’s shameful child poverty record.
 
Last but not least, I believe that solutions to the problems facing us as a province will not be found only in Victoria. People in communities across this province must be consulted and included in the decision making process.
 
I want to be leader of the BC NDP to ensure that communities are heard, and that British Columbians have a thoughtful, progressive, and relevant alternative to choose in the next election, whenever it may be. I am ready to lead, and look forward to the debate in the weeks and months ahead about the future of our party and our province.
