5 B.C. candle brands to cozy up with this fall

As the days get shorter, nothing says fall quite like the warm glow of a candle. From beeswax berries to forest-inspired scents, these five B.C. brands deliver cozy, sustainable vibes.

1. Crowfoot Collective

Some candle companies boast that they take inspiration from nature—and then there’s Crowfoot Collective, which takes it to a whole new level. The Cowichan Valley-based brand creates individually poured candles in whimsical but hyper-realistic moulds of berries, carrots and tomatoes using beeswax from local apiaries. You’ve never had sweeter birthday candles, trust us.

2. Canvas Candle Co.

A trip through Canvas Candle Co.’s offerings is certainly aspirational, and raises a question: “Where do you want to be?” Scents like Fireside and Best Coast feel transportive, but founder Caylen Baker’s intention is more than wanderlust. “It’s been my passion to educate people on making safer choices when it comes to their home fragrances,” she says of her scents, which are phthalate- and paraben-free.

3. Picot

You know you really love your candle’s scent when you wipe a bit of the wax oil on your skin to use as perfume—and that’s exactly what people started doing when Victoria-based Picot released their Honey Tobacco candle back in 2015. “Today, our vision is to reimagine scents, candles and skincare from the inside out,” says founder Britt Buntain, who is now expanding the brand into spas and hotels. What hasn’t changed is the candle’s enduring scent in a coconut, soy and beeswax blend—and that’s what keeps us coming back for more.

4. TALLU

Tallu’s non-toxic, soy-based candles are hand-poured in small batches in Vancouver, and they whisper (don’t scream) luxury—which is why you can find them in spots like Vancouver Civic Hotel and the Opus Hotel. Founder Katherine Evans believes in “creating moments of pause—small, beautiful rituals that help people reconnect with themselves” and we think that’s a lovely place to land.

5. Hollow Tree

Founded in 2016 by a tree planter and a forester, Whistler-based Hollow Tree Candle Co. pays homage to the forests of the Pacific Northwest, and that’s especially evident in bespoke scents like the Sea-to-Sky (made with wild rose, vanilla and sandalwood). This eco-conscious brand’s 9-oz ceramic candle pours burn for up to 60 hours; the company also invites its customers to appreciate nature by “learning to speak tree.”
