Prince George is the economic engine of the North

Prince George is an economy on the rise, strategically located to unlock the possibilities of growing businesses.

Nestled at the confluence of the Fraser and Nechako Rivers, on the Traditional Territory of the Lheidli T’enneh, Prince George acts as a gateway for new opportunity, innovation and natural beauty. Long known for its resource-rich foundation and industrial roots, Prince George is a city where community thrives, businesses scale and the wilderness is nearby.

A growing city with purpose

With over 89,000 residents and a trade area of 332,000, Prince George is growing. The local workforce of 55,000 is diverse and skilled, contributing to high-value job sectors such as mining, construction and manufacturing, and employed at over 8,200 local businesses.

A strategic hub for trade and transport

Prince George is strategically located at the intersection of Highways 16 and 97, and supported by an International Airport and CN Rail’s Intermodal hub. Its proximity to the Port of Prince Rupert positions the city two days closer to Asia-Pacific markets than any other major North American port.

An economy on the rise

Prince George set a new development record in 2024 with 417 building permits issued, totaling $267 million in value. This growth signals strong investor confidence in the city’s industrial and commercial sectors and reinforces its expanding economic base. Prince George also generated $65.4 million in hotel room revenue in 2024, suggesting a robust tourism sector.

Education and Healthcare: engines of growth

In 2023, UNBC secured $17.7 million in research funding, and its Northern Baccalaureate Nursing Program has been instrumental in addressing healthcare staffing needs in the region.

Northern Health is undertaking the expansion of the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (UHNBC) through the addition of a new Acute Care Tower, valued at $1.6B. As of early 2025, the organization employs over 3,200 people in Prince George.
