Vancouver city council is looking to give the Expo 86 grounds close to BC Place a makeover.

City council is proposing a massive renovation for the Expo 86 grounds and Plaza of Nations on the False Creek waterfront.

The grounds around BC Place could be getting a much-needed facelift in the near future if the Vancouver city council gets its way.
 
According to The Vancouver Sun, city council has endorsed a plan for a major renovation for the area including the development of 350,000 square feet of commercial, office and retail space.
 
The plan from architect James Cheng also includes a 30-storey glass arch framing BC Place (which I could aesthetically take or leave) with 2,000 residential units.
 
In addition to the glass arch and residential developments, the plans also include a new community centre with 69 daycare slots, bike paths connecting Georgia Street to Cooper’s Park and a $22-million practice arena for the Canucks.
 
North False Creek and downtown in general definitely could use additional housing, but currently, there don’t seem to be any estimates available on the redevelopment’s cost. The report does say the city will use a combination of private money and community contributions via Canadian Metropolitan to fund the project.
 
Considering the development will alter the skyline of downtown Vancouver, I can imagine the cost will be appropriately significant.
