The prospect of the Valemount Glacier Destination Resort opening in 2020 is prompting concern over housing affordability among the 1,000 or so residents of the nearby village of Valemount, B.C., some 120 kilometres west of Jasper, Alberta.
With a 2016 affordable housing needs report estimating that up to 20 per cent of Valemount homes were already in the hands of seasonal owners, the village formed a housing committee to study other tourism-based towns, including Fernie, Nelson and Whistler, for guidance on how to manage an influx of seasonal residents.
