Steinway and Sons Hits All the Right Notes With New Piano Player

Steinway and Sons’ new piano player creates a magical musical experience right in your own home
If you find yourself drawn to the sweeping elegance and dramatic depth of a well-played piano concerto, you may be familiar with Steinway & Sons. For more than 160 years, the U.S.-based piano maker has shared the stage with some of the world’s most renowned pianists—from classical star Lang Lang to jazz icon Diana Krall—and now, they’re about to earn a spot in the homes of non-players, too.
Touted as the company’s most significant and innovative product in over 70 years, the Steinway Spirio represents an evolution in self-playing piano technology. Controlled wirelessly through an iPad and the Spirio’s easy-to-use app, the player system measures details such as hammer velocity and proportional pedalling to create unparalleled, high-resolution reproductions that expertly capture every movement and emotion in a live piano performance.
“The Steinway Spirio is a truly remarkable musical innovation that allows every music lover the ability to enjoy world-class performances, regardless of one’s own piano playing skills,” notes Graham Blank, vice president of Tom Lee Music, an exclusive representative of Steinway & Sons in B.C., Calgary and Greater Toronto.
“First and foremost, it is a Steinway & Sons piano, possessing the world’s finest craftsmanship,” explains Blank. “Added to that is leading-edge technology that brings to life a range of subtlety and nuance never before possible in a player piano. The end result is an immersive musical experience unlike any other. Each performance is amazingly accurate in terms of both sound and motion.”
Seamlessly integrated into Steinway pianos during manufacturing, the Steinway Spirio is completely hidden from view so as not to compromise the beauty of the instrument, and the hardware has no impact on the touch and tone of the piano when played live.
The Steinway Spirio app also comes equipped with an impressive—and complimentary—music catalog featuring performances from a roster of over 1,700 Steinway Artists. Whether it’s a classical number by Sergei Rachmaninoff or a contemporary piece from Yuja Wang, each piece is recorded in stunning high-resolution to ensure unparalleled playback capabilities.
The ever-evolving library updates automatically as new music files become available, providing Steinway Spirio owners a wide range of performances at their fingertips. A collection of carefully curated playlists, themes and genres produced by Steinway & Sons’ musical experts—coupled with the player system’s fine-adjustment volume controls—also guarantee the perfect soundtrack to any occasion.
