Samsung made the announcement Thursday to coincide with Premier Christy Clark’s trade mission to Asia, which included a stopover in South Korea, where the company’s headquarters are located, although the facility has been open for a few months. Tom Nyberg, senior director of Samsung’s Vancouver Enterprise Lab told BCBusiness that the company has been ramping up operations since the Spring, when it began leasing a facility off North Fraser Way in Burnaby, adjacent to Best Buy Canada’s headquarters. The lab will focus on new initiatives enterprise security and mobility for the company’s next generation of devices. As the first Canadian R&D lab, it’s brought on a team of 60 software engineers, designers and operations staff. Vancouver’s talent base in software development, specifically enterprise software, was a major reason why Samsung chose B.C., says Nyberg. “It’s a good place to do business and a good place to develop technology,” he says.
