The province and the country suffer disappointing unemployment rate increases in July. The month of July may have brought us sunny skies here in Vancouver, but it also brought disappointing results for B.C.’s job market. According to Statistics Canada, the province lost 15,000 jobs in July, pushing B.C.’s unemployment rate up 0.4 per cent to 7 per cent. The spike in unemployment comes after hovering at a steady rate for the two previous months.

The spike in unemployment comes after hovering at a steady rate for the two previous months. What’s even more worrying than our own province’s woes is the bigger picture for the country. Canada lost 30,400 jobs in the same month, which is the first significant loss since November of last year. The round of heavy job shedding inched the country’s unemployment rate up to 7.3 per cent. And what’s worse is that analysts aren’t expecting much better for August’s numbers. Does the dropoff in job additions mean Canada’s economic recovery has bottomed out?
