By grade 12, Lauryn Leung knew she wouldn’t sustain a traditional nine-to-five. Living with undiagnosed endometriosis, simply getting out of bed—or through a school day—felt impossible. “I kept thinking, how am I ever going to hold a regular job without getting fired?” she says. During early shifts as an aesthetician, the pain was so intense she’d curl into a ball between treatments.
Leung decided to build a career around her health, not in spite of it. Her medi-spa Clear Complexions Co. started small: a spare bedroom in her parents’ home, a treatment bed, a humble signboard and 30 facial clients a week. From there, Leung scaled carefully—home studio to low-rent office to, most recently, a 1,400-square-foot flagship storefront in Mount Pleasant. Today, her practice blends tech-forward aesthetic treatments with holistic care—powered by a diverse, all-women team.

Bootstrapping wasn’t optional. Leung self-funded a $200,000 laser machine and was denied multiple business loans because of her age and lack of assets—despite healthy margins. Still, growth followed. Revenue climbed from $48,000 in year one to a projected $306,000 in year four.
Over the next few years, the 26-year-old plans to grow her clinic to 15-plus practitioners to meet demand. In parallel, she’s turning education into a major growth engine—rolling out monthly in-person trainings and online certification programs for aestheticians across B.C. and beyond. The vision: build Clear Complexions Co. into a leading skin and wellness destination in Western Canada, supported by services, retail and education revenue topping $500,000 annually.
