Surrey ranks among Canada’s top cities for digital infrastructure and economic growth

Surrey, B.C. is positioned as Canada's rising global investment destination.

The City of Surrey has proven itself a national leader in innovation and economic resilience, earning top rankings in the latest Resonance Consultancy study comparing major Canadian cities across a range of metrics. Benchmarking Surrey to 15 Canadian peer cities, the report highlights the City’s exceptional performance in both digital infrastructure and economic development, reinforcing its position as a world-class connected hub.

“Surrey is at the forefront of digital innovation,” said Mayor Brenda Locke. “Our investments in broadband infrastructure are not only enhancing connectivity but also driving economic growth and social engagement.”

Ranked No. 4 in internet infrastructure, Surrey boasts one of the best average upload and download speeds among peer cities, with an industry-leading average upload speed of 61.4 megabits per second. This achievement reflects the City’s commitment to digital equity and innovation through initiatives like the Smart Surrey Broadband Strategy, which is accelerating fibre infrastructure deployment to ensure over 90% of homes and businesses have access to super-fast gigabit-capable internet.

Surrey’s economic indicators are equally impressive:

  • No. 2 in GDP growth at 6.4%
  • No. 2 in company growth rate at 2.2%
  • No. 2 in income equality with a Gini coefficient of 0.27 (lower numbers mean less income inequality and more even income distribution among residents)
  • No. 3 in unemployment rate at 5.1%

Surrey also ranks No. 4 in median disposable household income at $87,000, offering families more financial flexibility and a higher quality of life.

“This is good news for business owners and investors,” said Tyler Westover, director of business and government relations. “Surrey is strategically positioned to help businesses scale, with a growing population, strong infrastructure and a commitment to inclusive prosperity.”

Surrey also ranks No. 2 in access to international ports of entry, making it a prime location for businesses reliant on global logistics and cross-border trade. This advantage is second only to Montreal, further enhancing Surrey’s appeal as a hub for commerce and innovation.
