How suspending U.S. drug patents in Canada could cure the trade war

Instead of slapping retaliatory tariffs on U.S. exports like maple syrup, Canada should consider going after drug patents, says Ottawa lawyer and biomedical scientist Amir Attaran. The U.S. holds more pharmaceutical patents and other intellectual property licences than any other country, but if Canada suspended American patents on our soil, Canadian companies would be able to produce those drugs. The goal is to make the pharmaceutical lobby nervous enough to pressure the U.S. administration to resolve the current trade dispute.
